In the past few years most major periodicals, including Time and Newsweek, have sported headlines suggesting that there may be a "Boy Crisis." Dr. William Pollack wrote that boys are "scared and disconnected" and "severely lagging" behind girls in achievement and self-confidence. Whether it's a full-blown crisis or not, there is no doubt that boys are falling behind girls in school and increasing in diagnoses of pathology. 

In this presentation, Dr. Jerry Shapiro will explore new issues for boys and offer a host of solutions to the current problems. The core of the presentation is to develop more effective ways to reach our sons, while still honoring our daughter's experiences. He will focus on what we can do to counteract the socially-induced deficits as well as teach specific skills that work for boys. Topics will include:

• how to better talk so boys will listen
• how to provide more boy-centered learning experiences
• how to avoid gender stereotyping
• how boys learn best
• myths of boyhood

Dr. Jerrold Lee Shapiro has been working with parents and families for four decades. He is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist and Professor of Counseling Psychology at Santa Clara University. He is the author of nine books, including The Measure of a Man: Becoming the Father You Wish Your Father Had Been. He has appeared in national broadcast and print media, including The Oprah Winfrey Show and the CBS Morning Show.
